Geo-enhanced Field Collections & Inspections for an 80 Year-Old Firm

Old habits are hard to break, especially those created over decades of work experience. In the past, the civil engineering firm has been very comfortable with the patterns of field staff taking hand written notes, snapping photos with a camera, using desktop applications (CAD & GIS), and manually reformatting the collected data multiple times to serve multiple purposes. This presentation is a story of a successful implementation of geospatial technology in a civil engineering firm by extending the geospatial platform to knowledge workers (field inspectors), embracing the “work anywhere” pattern of data collection, and providing “Executive Access” to project managers and decision makers. While the example is specific, the experiences and lessons learned apply to a broader scope of situations faced by our GIS Community.
