The continued evolution of geospatial tools is having a direct impact on the worlds of planning and design. New sources of data from volunteered geographic information and ubiquitous imagery and sensors are causing the design world to re-examine the ways that GIS be used as a design tool to shape our communities. Grappling with this multidisciplinary challenge is a new group of users exploring this area as the field of geodesign. Embracing major challenges from climate change and green infrastructure to healthy communities and walkable cities, designers and planners are working with geographers and computer scientists to integrate new information and tools into the design process and planning decisions.
