Signal timing has a significant impact on an intersection operational performance. Conventional signal systems leverage pre-programmed/ pre-timed signal timing schedules. These systems are easy to implement and maintain; however, they do not consider irregular fluctuation and major interruptions in traffic flow as a result of accidents, special events, or construction works. Actuated traffic control systems were initiated to improve shortcomings of pre-timed signal systems and alleviate congestion and delay in roadway networks. Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) which utilizes the actuated concept in the network level adjusts signal timings based on real time traffic conditions, demands, and system capacity. The following benefits make ATCS a superior system over conventional pre-timed traffic control systems. -Manage fluctuation and variability in traffic volume in daily-basis -Enhance travel time reliability by seamless progression of vehicles. -Reduce costs of retiming -Control conflicts between vehicular traffic and other modes -Record continually real-time data for measuring performance and efficiency
